There is an inherent romanticism to the natural sciences that could draw in layman, child, and scholar alike—a warmth that may be lacking, at least to the naked eye, from other fields of study. Perhaps this is why natural history is such a gateway for many of us, drawn in by the tangible; antique wood, leather-bound tomes. intricate displays, flashes of brilliant nacreous hues amongst the earthen and bone tonalities from birds, bugs, and enigmatic mineral formations—quite the contrast to the cold, sterile environment one might otherwise associate with the sciences.

The study of Natural History has been described as “A practice of intentional, focused attentiveness and receptivity to the more-than-human world, guided by honesty and accuracy.” [T. Fleischner]

Painfully aware of the unwilling sacrifices to science and what it can cost to truly crack something open and understand it, we honour these plumed and polished martyrs to our curiosity, as well as the generous gifts the Earth so freely gives. Histoires Naturelles (Natural His-stories) is an olfactory ode to their priceless contributions and how nature shares its stories so that we may, in turn, better understand it and our own.

A well-curated collection of curios needn’t rely on grotesque memorabilia or ‘malformed’ specimens to captivate an audience, for bits and pieces too often overlooked as mundane are often stranger than fiction.

Ingredients: soy wax, natural fragrance/parfum (essential oils, absolutes, and other natural botanical extractions), wooden wick, cotton wick, and a sprinkle of botanicals.

100 g scented candle in a black glass vessel with a lid and wood-encased cotton wick. Do not leave burning candles unattended, and keep out of reach of children, pets, and flammable materials. Remove dried botanicals before burning. For optimal burn, trim wick 1/4" after each use.

The Ritual: Hang, carry, or decant the sachet to infuse the air with perfume. Or, to burn scented resins, light a self-igniting charcoal disk and place in a heat-resistant container, allowing for embers to catch before placing a small amount of resin rock incense into the divot. Do not burn incense unattended, and keep out of reach of children, pets, or flammable materials. Use caution when handling vessel, which may become hot to the touch.
