Myroxylon trouve son origine dans la langue grecque, où il signifie "bois parfumé". Fidèle à son nom, l'huile essentielle de baume du Pérou a un arôme riche, mielleux et balsamique avec de douces nuances boisées. Cette résine aromatique est appréciée par les populations indigènes depuis des siècles ; son utilisation la plus ancienne remonte à l'ancienne culture maya, où elle était brûlée comme encens de cérémonie. Elle contient des niveaux élevés de vaniline naturelle, ce qui lui confère son arôme distinct de vanille.
