MYRRH | Essential Oil
Pure Commiphora myrrha essential oil.
Myrrh essential oil is distilled from Commiphora myrrha (myrrh, or common myrrh), a tree native to the Arabian peninsula (Oman, Yemen) and Africa (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Northeast Kenya). Myrrh resin from this and other Commiphora varieties has been used throughout history as perfume, incense, and medicine. It is harvested in the same way as opopanax and frankincense, by slashing the bark of trees and collecting the viscous resin, or 'tears,' that bleeds from the wounds.
In Christianity, gold, frankincense, and myrrh were the gifts given to the infant Jesus by the three wise men. In ancient Egypt, myrrh was used in embalming rituals. It is traditionally used in aromatherapy to relieve colds, congestion, and coughs, and for its sedative properties, to lift negative moods, promote groundedness, and encourage the feeling of spiritual awakening.
The scent is warm-spicy with a peculiar, sharp-balsamic, slightly medicinal top note and a sweet dry down.
