Absinthe (Wormwood) - Pure Essential Oil
Wormwood, or Artemisia absinthium, is a small shrub originally native to Europe and Northern Africa that has a long history in folk medicine, and is perhaps best known as the key ingredient in absinthe. Alongside the fragrant compounds that give absinthe its mint-like flavour, wormwood essential oil contains thujone, a psychoactive substance that is toxic in high concentrations (and is responsible for the "green fairy" hallucinations historically caused by absinthe). For this reason, therapeutic use of wormwood essential oil requires particular care, and prolonged use of wormwood essential oil should be avoided.
The oil is a very dark green to bluish-green or brownish-green colour with an intensely herbaceous-green, sharp, fresh top note. The odour is reminiscent of cedar leaf oil but more dry-woody and not as sweet.
It is traditionally used as a bitter to regulate the production of stomach acids and facilitate digestion, as a liver detoxifier, and as a gentle sedative to relieve stress and promote sleep.
It blends well with jasmine, lavender, neroli, orange, lavender, ylang ylang, frankincense, manuka, and myrrh.
